Turning Red by Domee Shi film review

A classic coming-of-age tale with a furry twist, Turning Red sneakily proved itself to be one this year’s best animated movies.

Its general story of self-discovery was smartly imbued with cultural references, modern characteristics, and relatable content. The narrative unraveled smoothly without ever feeling pretentious or forced.

The characters were well-written, each with different dimensions and individual aspects. It is a timeless generational story that oddly felt specific and bound, in the best sense possible.

The colorful and lively color palette and the eye-popping animation and graphics quickly helped in establishing a cozy, relaxing and absolutely entertaining atmosphere. One that both youngsters and grown ups can relate to.

Turning Red is a visually and emotionally beautiful film that is proud of its source material and is not afraid to highlight it.
